Our fair trade partners on the ground in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa and other regions bring us quality goods without the high price of exploitation. Their business models vary from charities to small businesses to promoters of multiple micro enterprises. Spanning this diversity lies one clear thread, to promote the producer above profits. Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank (microfinance), believes that the ending of poverty is simply a question of will. We believe that Fairtrade is one arrow in the quiver that can bring this about. Whether this is realised in part or in full, the exciting reality of Fairtrade is every pack of coffee, every sweat free gift, every piece of jewellery made by a HIV positive lady, is making an impact right here and now.
Beyond these tools of information and buying power we would love to challenge you to a greater depth of understanding and involvement with the poor. If at the end of the day a school has reconsidered where it buys it’s uniforms, a business has changed it’s coffee sourcing or a corporate head demands that they know their overseas manufacture is ‘clean’ we will be satisfied. If you as an individual walk a bit taller because you know there is power in how you shop and think, our job is on the way to being done. Poverty need not see us westerners walking round burdened with shame, but quietly and determinedly motivated to make the change that we can within our varied circles of influence.
